About OBA
Our group met for the first time in November, 2012, with 6 founding members.
We have 37 members as of November 2017. Many of us are also members of the American Society of Botanical Artists (ASBA), which is how our founders originally came to meet one another. One of our founding members holds the British SBA distance-learning certificate in Botanical Art. Another is a lifelong artist whose work ranges from botanicals to landscapes. Another is the former botanical artist for the Oregonian, and yet another was once the botanical artist for the Washington Post, in Washington, D.C.. We have a popular botanical art instructor / gallery owner from Salem. My own work background is in editorial graphic design, but I never got over the wonderful botanical art classes that I took at the New York Botanical Garden before moving to Portland in 2009. (I earned their certificate in Botanical Art in 2015). Several members of our group are huge fans of botanical art and still pretty new to it, and very hungry for good quality workshops and classes, which are still hard to find here, though the ASBA Chapter in Seattle (Pacific Northwest Botanical Artists - or PNBA), does a great job of attracting world-class instructors to the region a couple of times each year. We have hosted workshops with top-notch instructors, and continue to pursue educational opportunities. As we grow, we hope to be able to draw even more talented teachers for workshops and classes, and particularly to offer a range of courses that will appeal to beginners and advanced artists alike. Another goal is to find opportunities here for regularly exhibiting our work.
We currently meet once a month, typically at a member’s home. Sometimes at an outside venue. At our monthly meetings we draw and paint together, and catch up with each others' news. We try to hold at least one meeting per year outside the Portland area - in order to be able to include more of our members who live outside of Portland, and to have a day of working together and sharing our work in person.
We have been a presence at Audubon Society's Wild Arts Show, at the Yard, Garden & Patio show, and the Hardy Plant Society's Hortlandia show. We have participated in the juried David Douglas and Lan Su Chinese Garden exhibits. We have given presentations on the History of Botanical Art to local chapters of the Native Plant Society of Oregon and elsewhere. Members of our group teach classes and hold workshops at a variety of venues throughout Oregon.
Portland is an absolute gem for plant lovers. It’s a lush, temperate climate with the longest spring and fall seasons I’ve ever witnessed, and it’s loaded with nature-loving citizens. We hope to contribute to making it a great spot for botanical art, too.
